TRANSLATIONS

Meadowlands

Open fields, boundless plains,
Open fields and endless prairie;
There go across the fields the heroes,
Yes the heroes of the Great Red Army.

Young girls are crying,
All the girls today are mournful.
Sweethearts rode out with the army,
Yes, they'll be long gone with the army.

Girls, raise your eyes up;
Follow with your eyes our journey,
See how the distant road goes winding,
Yes, the joyous open highway.

Song of Alexander Nevski

Yes, twas on the River Neva it occurred.
On the Neva's stream, on the waters deep.
There we slew our foes' pick of fighting men
Army of the Swedes.

Ah, how we did fight, how we routed them!
Yes, we smashed their ships at war to kindling wood.
In the fight our red blood was freely shed.
For our great land, our native Russian land.

Where the broad axe swung was an open street,
Through their ranks ran a lane where the spear was thrust
We mowed down the Swedes, the invading troops,
just like feather grass grown on desert soil.

We shall never yield native Russian land.
They who march on Russia shall be put to death.
Rise against the foe, Russian land arise,
Rise to arms, arise, great town Novgorod.

ABOUT THE NOTABLES

The Notables started as a club of the Hughes Aircraft Company Employees Association in El Segundo back in 1981. For 16 years they entertained HAC employees as well as other community audiences. The reorganization of Hughes - the formation of Hughes Electronics and the merger of HAC with Raytheon - prompted the Notables to become an independent organization, and they joined the El Segundo Chamber of Commerce in April 1997.

The Notables have been featured in the KCET Holiday Affair on Christmas Eve at the Los Angeles Music Center, center field at Dodger Stadium for the national anthem, and have sung with major instrumental groups.

The group's mission is to bring quality vocal music to your community - saving you the expense and hassle of driving downtown!

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Randall Schwalbe assumed the podium 6 months after the inception of the Notables. It was his first choral conducting assignment after earning a degree in instrumental music education at UCLA. Since that time, Randall has directed musicals, a church choir, and is currently at the helm of the Ellis-Orpheus Men's Chorus. Trained as a trombone player and conductor, he shares his passion for music equally in orchestral and ensemble playing and choral conducting... "Nothing reaches in and stirs the soul more effectively than the collective sounds of the human voice..."
